So, maybe you’ve started working on a project (writing, art, music, etc) and then you share the project with someone and they tell you how it reminds you of something else. It happens. So, what do you do when someone has or is creating something similar to what you’re working on?
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Do it anyway.
- I’m not saying to copy someone else’s work, but sometimes creators happen upon the same idea. That doesn’t mean the final product will be the same.
- Your project will be yours, which means you are creating something only you can make. If it’s writing, your story will be unlike anyone else’s. Sometimes, retelling a story can be something new. Think about how many times stories like Cinderella or Alice in Wonderland have been retold.
- We learn about ourselves by creating, so sometimes that’s what the project is for.
- Some projects are about practicing your skills, not about creating something new. It’s worthwhile sometimes see where recreating something that already exists takes you. You might be surprised.
- Think about all the fanart and fanfics that exist. Retellings in your style can be new and exciting too.
- You don’t have to publish (or share it with anyone else).
- If after you create the thing, you think it’s too much like something else that exists, you don’t have to share it. Sometimes the process was for you only. Think of the process as learning or therapy.
Again, don’t copy anyone on purpose, but similar ideas do happen. After all, how many stories start with a kid getting invited to a magical school…
Whatever you’re working on, hope it’s going well!
Happy reading and writing today and every day! And happy holidays!
