Book Review

Book Review: Ordinary Monsters

Okay, so I don’t do this very often on my blog, but I want to write about a book I finished reading this week. (If you talk to me in person or on the phone, I talk about the books I’m reading ALL THE TIME, but on my blog, I try to focus on my writing and stuff like that.)

The book I want to discuss is Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro.

It’s soooooo good. I read that it has some mixed reviews, but I honestly think some people might have found it too long. My edition has 658 pages. It is a tome, but still such a great read. I also read that some people thought there were too many characters. I don’t agree. I love books that have a whole cast of main characters. It’s my favorite kind of story. It’s reminiscent of Dickens, and how can you not love an ensemble? It makes for some really great overlapping plots, especially when it comes together, and you finally see how all the characters are actually a part of the same plot.

I don’t want to give away too much but imagine if X-men was set in the late 1800s, and like Professor X, there was a man gathering children with “talents” at a school to help those children understand their powers. That’s all I want to say because it’s so good. (Anytime there is a school and children with “powers” I think of X-men. I can’t help it.)

It had good vs evil. It has some characters who you believe are up to one thing, but in the end, they are actually up to something else. (Because who doesn’t love a plot twist.)

I thought it was action packed and well-paced. I’m genuinely surprised it wasn’t split into two books because so much happens.

If you are looking for a great read that involves superhuman children trying to protect our world, look no further. Ordinary Monsters gets my highest recommendation!

Happy reading and writing today and every day!
